Update: June 2003

To those who have emailed me lately with the impression that I promote wolfdogs, allow me to set you straight.

I DO NOT PROMOTE WOLFDOGS, I DO NOT BREED WOLFDOGS, NOR DO I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD EVER BE BRED.  Not because I feel they are aggressive, but because people are uneducated about wolves.

There is nothing I can do to change the fact that people will continue to own and/or breed wolfdogs.  The purpose of this page is to DEFEND wolfdogs, not PROMOTE them.  ED makes them out to be pure evil which just isn't true.  THAT is the ONLY point I'm trying to make here.

If someone has a wolfdog that barks, the owner will say "ohhh, that's the DOG in him"
If someone has a wolfdog with a tail that curls flat against his back the owner will say "ohhh, that's the DOG in him"
Now if someone has a wolfdog that attacks someone, the UNEDUCATED public will say "ohhh, that's the WOLF in him"

How do you figure?

Healthy wolves DO NOT attack people, in fact you'd be lucky to even see one in the wild.  Not only because we've nearly killed them all, but because they fear humans.  (geee, I wonder why)

German Shepherds on the other hand DO have a history of attacking people.  So now when people breed wolves to German Shepherds and they attack or kill someone, WOLVES are the animal blamed for it.  Why is it that the German Shepherd is left out of the mix?  The least everyone can do here is be honest.

To anyone thinking about adding a dog to your family (wolfdog or not) I suggest you do your homework.  Visit your local shelters, rescues, and book stores and learn everything you can about the breed you are interested in.

Again..................  CHILDREN SHOULD BE SUPERVISED AROUND ALL DOGS

I would also like to add that I DO NOT OWN woldfogs, I rescue and rehome unwanted, neglected and abused wolfdogs.  Along with GERMAN SHEPHERDS, Malamutes and Siberian Huskies.  I for one am NOT predigest against ANY breed, and neither should any of YOU.  Dogs are most often molded my the people who own them, and If you have an aggressive animal, you need you ask yourself what you're doing wrong.

Positive reinforcement, training, socialization, education and care are the key ingredients to a well behaved and happy animal.  If you have a wolfdogs or any large breed dog that has been chained to a tree in your backyard for the last 2 years, don't be surprised when he/she does in fact attack someone.  Unfortunately it's the animal that will pay the ultimate price of being euthanized rather this his or her owners who are truly the ones who deserve it..

To those of you who have sent so many encouraging emails, I appreciate your support.
You give me the strength I need to continue, as well as validate my cause to continue saving wolves and wolfdogs all over the United States..
We at Tundra Shepherd Rescue thank you for that.

To those who haven't supported me (2 or 3 during the 6 year period that this page has been up) I'm really sorry that you feel the way you do about wolves and wolfdogs.  All I can do is tell you the facts and hope to change your mind, but there is NOTHING you can say to me to make me change mine.  I've done the homework, over 20 years of research, and I live with these animals 24/7/365, I know how they behave first hand.  None of the wolfdogs that I've ever taken in have been aggressive towards people.

Please do not email me with negativity or attitude.  I do not expect everyone to agree with what I say, but am no longer going to reply to those who don't.  I have a very stressful schedule dealing with the animals that I already have along with all the phone calls and emails I get from people wanting to surrender their animals, not to mention all the animals on the euthanasia list at the shelters I deal with.  Since involving myself in rescue, I'm slowly becoming a person with very little tolerance for the human race.

Make more use of your time and don't waste it emailing me on the evils of wolves.

Sincerely,

Christine

UPDATE - January 2006

Again I was reminded in an email about Ed.  I went to his website and was shocked to find that his wolfdog pages are not as easily found anymore.  You have to type WOLF in on his search section.  He's still at it though, still hating wolfdogs.  I decided to do more research on my own and found a stats page listing German Shepherds as 9% of the dogs who attack and Wolfdogs 5%.  Why is Ed so convinced that Wolfdogs are worse than German Shepherds?  I assume it's because Ed breeds German Shepherds and wants to continue making momey.  I'm right huh Ed..

In doing my search I started to think about us humans.  How many times have you watched the news to learn that someone just killed their own child.  TOO MANY TIMES.  I still have yet to see a wolfdog attack on the news.  So I'm curious now ED - Are all humans kid killers now?  Because more humans kill children than wolfdogs.  It's a sad and pathetic world we live in..  Maybe you should focus on humans and how we treat each other and our animals.  Wolfdogs are the LEAST of our problems here in the USA.
People are chaining up these dogs, neglecting them, abusing them, starving them, killing them.  Those same people are raising children.  What parent allows their 2 year old baby into a neigbors yard alone...............one that isn't paying attention.  What owner chains their dog up day after day after day..........one that isn't paying attention.  The mix is deadly..............but hey, lets blame the DOG!  God forbid we blame ourselves.

How was that animal treated prior to the attack?  Where were the parents of that 2 year old?  Just something to think about..........

A couple years ago I rescued a 2 year old high content wolfdog.  She had been chained up her whole life and when her owners moved out, they left her behind chained up in the back yard.  She was found by animal control and I was then notified about her.  Her collar was so tight around her neck, I dont think the owners ever adjusted it from puppyhood.  She was so skinny and had no social skills what so ever.  She was so afraid of people.  Can ya blame her?  Last year she became very ill and after spending $7,000 trying to make her better we decided we needed to let her go to Heaven.  After everything she had been through in her first 2 years, she was never aggressive towards humans or other animals during her stay with me.  Though she never became social.
Update: April, 2000

According to a local ER doctor here in Phoenix, Chow's are the number one dog guilty of attacking children.

According to a local Pediatric doctor here in Phoenix, German Shepherd's are the number one dog guilty of attacking children.

The worst thing I've heard about a Wolfdog is that one killed the families pet pig.
Sorry, but that's considered normal dog behavior. I've been through it myself with my own wolfdogs. But aggression towards people? NEVER.. In fact, if you're looking for a good watch dog, don't get a Wolfdog. They'll chew the fat with a stranger before they chew off an arm or a leg.

~~~ Children should be supervised around ALL dogs, not just Wolfdogs ~~~
Update: January, 2001
I was reminded in an email today about Ed's site.. I checked it out again but it hasn't changed much.. He's still an asshole...... Me being me, I couldn't help but send him another email.. Of course I'll only be insulted by him if he choses to reply..
My Email to Ed:
Ed,
I find it odd that you would breed and sell German Shepherds. When according to several local Pediatric and ER Doctors, German Shepherds are the NUMBER ONE dog guilty of attacking children..
In a review of 109 fatal dog attacks, among the many breeds involved, the breeds most frequently implicated were pit bulls, rottweilers, and German shepherds. The identification of these breeds has lead to the controversial practice of breed bans.
On your website, you mentioned this wolfdog attack................  1/95 - Black Hawk, South Dakota - Two--year-old Russell Evans was killed when he entered a neighbor's fenced yard containing a chained wolf hybrid................  What you failed to mention was that this animal was also mixed with GERMAN SHEPHERD..
All wolfdogs are mixed with SOMETHING..... How many of them do you think have German Shepherd blood in them? You need to look a little deeper and realize that there has NEVER been a documented attack involving a healthy wolf in history.. That alone should tell you that it's the DOG in the WOLF, and not the other way around who may or may not attack children... You need to give a correct listing of what these animals are being bred with, at least then you'd be a little more honest in your plight against wolves... Though you may sell a few less German Shepherds, isn't it better to be HONEST???
Here's to hoping you sleep well at night knowing that you breed and sell a portion of the 800,000 dogs who attack each year...
Sincerely,
Christine
Note: A chained animal is most often not properly cared for and/or is not properly socialized. This is one of the key eliminates in a majority of all dog attacks...
Pictured below is my 7 year old daughter with one of my ahhhh.........  KID KILLERS
Pssss.........She's 13 now......alive and well....
and has befriended many wolves and wolfdogs over the years.
I just recieved a link in my email taking me to a wolfdog page.  I was floored by what I read and extremly angered. The title of this page is..
My Opinion of
By Ed Frawley
To say the least, I'm typing with a little attitude right now.
For someone to deface an entire breed like that is ridicules. First off, many dogs attack for whatever reason, but to call a wolfdog a " kid killer " is INSANE. In Ed Frawley's site, he documents 20 some wolfdog attacks over a 3 year period and still has the nerve to call them " dangerous animals. " Lets be honest here, during that 3 year period, there were thousands of " non-wolfdog " attacks that he failed to mention. I firmly believe that when talking about wolfdog attacks, that it is the DOG in the WOLF and not the other way around. As anyone who knows anything about wolves knows that they are very shy and timid animals. Ed Frawley also states on his site that  "wolfdogs are much more prone to attacking children than any breed of dog. " Since when? Ed, don't you read the paper? watch the news? C'mon, when you hear about a dog attack, it's usually followed by the words PIT BULL, DOBERMAN, ROTTWEILER and/or CHOWS. Never in my history of watching the news have I heard about a wolfdog attack. Thats enough to tell me that wolfdogs are NOT the majority like you say. Wolfdogs may have a few bad seeds, but tell me a breed that doesn't.  My sheltie would have bitten a child long before my wolfdog would have ever thought about it. Should I say ALL shelties are " kid killers " now?
Ed lists 42 wolfdog attacks from 1981-1996. Thats less than 3 attacks per year.  How many other large breeds can you say that about? Pit Bulls? I'd say there have been at least that many attacks by Pit Bulls in just the last week alone. I will not say that wolfdogs don't attack, (all dogs can attack) what I'm saying is that they are NOT the majority. There are much more aggressive animals out there than the wolfdog.
Ed, you  piss me off. Not only in your false statements but in the way  you address the people who have emailed you. Because not everyone agrees with what you say, you call them  "stupid", "airheads", "fools", and "dinks". Tell me, how responsible is that? If you can't handle being called on your oppinions, you shouldn't have created a page of this nature.
Ed's Reply To My Email:
You are lucky that your hybrid has not shown aggression towards strange kids, don't kid yourself that it can not happen in a split instant. If you were not stuck a pigs head you would see that I have written articles on dogs biting kids. You are still an idiot for owning a hybrid.  I could give a shit what you think about what I have written on my web site. Your opinion means nothing to me. I don't care to debate you and I don't want to hear from you again. Your email has been blocked.  Get a life
My Reply To This Is:
Ed, if you truly believed in what you were saying in your website, you wouldn't be so quick to attack people. You would simply try to prove your points in a respectful manner. And no Ed, I won't be emailing you again, people like you are a waste of time.
PS..
About the 42 "WOLFDOG" attacks you list in a 20 year period.. The USHS documents approx. 800,000  "DOG" attacks per year...  There again, that should tell you WOLFDOGS ARE NOT THE MAJORITY. Hmmm.. Something you didn't know?
God I miss her!  Used to take her to the off leash dog parks every day in hopes of socializing her, she loved going.  She never messed with the other dogs there no matter their size, she always just kept to herself.  She would run around until she wore herself out and then would just go lay in the corner and wait to go home.  So many people would ask questions about her, most of them were just in awe of her.  Of course there were a few people who were scared for their dogs lives while she was there.  She was a great example of this amazing breed, and though she was abused, her spirit was never broken.
See ya at the bridge Aspen...........I love you.
Here's Makia, another one of our favorite rescues.
